Everyone needs to go hear "good" live music often

Though it stormed all morning and into the afternoon
yesterday, it cleared up in time to make the drive
to Owensboro to hear the Carolina Chocolate Drops
and Emmylou Harris. I was really impressed with
the Chocolate Drops and plan to go see them again
when possible. And Emmylou, well, not quite sure
how to encapsulate in words what it was like to hear
her--that incredible voice I have listened to for years
but had never been priviledged to hear live
until last night. Unforgettable. Will make its way into
a poem. Had a great time slipping in the mud, watching
children dance to the music, blow bubbles, fall asleep
in a parent's arms; observing the crowd--so diverse,
from teens to the elderly; letting the music just take
me where it wanted to take me--sometimes nowhere
other than allowing me that moment. Other times,
back to a place when I first heard a particular song,
and other times, new places entirely. It was a lovely
night, and I am grateful for being part of it.

What a lovely night it was in KY last night for a bluegrass festival, and Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers were amazing! It was about 74 degrees, light breeze, no clouds, and lots of people just enjoying the night! Can't wait to go back tomorrow. Emmylou Harris tomorrow night at 8!

Vignette, Summer Night, 2011

In the quiet of summer,
streetlights hum their night tune:
a train clacks on the tracks,
No traffic passes.
Her voice rises, reverberates
against the solid
brick of the boarded-up
concrete company, reaches
a crescendo as her little Angel
decides she doesn't want
to take a poo
at that moment.
Angel, goddammit, do it!
Do it now or I'm gonna whip
yer ass! Do it. Ya hear me!
And Angel perhaps obliged,
her human's voice loud even
when quiet, now soothing Angel
with a Baby, you so good.
Ya love yer Mama,
don't ya, girl?
Ahhh, yes.
Finish with a cough:
a streetlight sputters out,
a car makes the curve
smooth as a knife
through warm butter,
Angel fades into black,
obscured moon peers
through the remnants
of late afternoon storm clouds,
pebbles crunch underfoot,
the desire to escape
from this Mayberry madness
overcomes the viewer
who wants to run like hell
and never look back.

Spring is now summer, though officially summer does not begin
until June 21st or 22nd ...can't remember. What I know is that
all of the spring blooms are gone and my yard is now filled with
summer's blossoms. Gone are the hyacinths and daffodils, gone
are the azaleas and rhododedrons. Gone the perky little crocus
under the remains of my once graceful pink dogwood, gone the
tulips. Gone the cool nights. Gone the rainy days. Gone.

So, some pictures of early summer. The plants and smells
of summer, come early. Man, I am so wanting to read
Tennessee Williams.

Wedding pictures coming soon. Mama is still exhausted but very happy for my daughter and my son-in-law! The cicadas almost drowned out the wedding vows, but it all worked out! Lovely.
